Fish in a box

What you need

  • ShoeboxFish in a box
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Fish stickers or pictures (have your parents print the ones on the right or find some in old magazines)
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Card stock
  • Scotch tape
  • Paint
  • Craft knife

 How you do it

  • Paint the shoebox as you like it. Wait to dry and set it on its side.
  • Decorate the back of the shoebox with 2 layers of wavy blue paper. Also, decorate the foreground with a layer of wavy blue paper.
  • Add small paper rocks and plants to the bottom of the shoebox.
  • Place a bamboo skewer down on a piece of heavy paper. Press a fish sticker down onto the skewer and the paper so that the skewer is firmly stuck between the paper and the sticker. Repeat.
  • Cut all of your newly stuck fish/frogs out. Cut small rectangles of card stock. Take 2 and place them in an "X" shape. With your craft knife punch a hole through the middle of the "X" big enough for a skewer to go through.
  • Make more "X"s, enough for all your fish/frog. Cut 2 slits down the length of the top of the shoebox. They should be wide enough for the skewers to go through. Push the skewer end of the skewered fish up through the slits.
  • Push the card "X"s down over the end of the skewers popping up through the box. Tape them into place.

Sci Kids, please make sure to ask your parents for help!

If you don't like fish, you can build a puppet theatre out of a shoe box. Think of other great things to build in shoeboxes!
