Participating schools

Albany Junior High School - Auckland

We are the ‘Max Plank’ group. The students in the group are George, David and Izaac  (all year 10).

Beatrice Tinsley Group. This is our group, we are named after the famous New Zealand scientist, Beatrice Tinsley. She was a cosmologist and an astronomer.

Beatrice Tinsley studied at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where she first completed a B.Sc. and then a Master of Science degree in 1961, and she was awarded with First Class Honours in Physics. She later on became a professor of astronomy at Yale University, in America.

Our group is called Ernest Rutherford because he was a talented New Zealand scientist and we think that he is a good influence on us. We have started our project and when we dug, we found nothing. This was probably because we were having a minor drought and the ground was extemely hard and dry, hence, no living creatures were to be found.

Birkenhead Primary School - Auckland

We have two groups for this project:

One group is working on an area that has some native and some exotic plants on a north facing slope. We are hoping to turn this area into a Lizard Hotel, eventually.

Another group is working on a grassed area, north facing, no trees around.

Cockle Bay School - Auckland

Cockle Bay Students are really looking forward to being a part of the Meet a Metre project again this year. This year the Year 5/6 groups from 2009 will continue to work in the areas they used as their quadrats last year and will be developing and maintaining the gardens. The new Year 4s for 2010 will be given the opportunity to self nominate to be a part of Meet a Metre.

Correspondence School - Wellington

Hi. I am doing Meet a Metre on my own with my mum & dad as I am a correspondence pupil. I am Y4 and I am looking forward to  doing this project - Reece.

Ferndale Special school - Christchurch

We have six of our senior students who will be working on Meet a Metre in two groups as part of their Bronze DoE Hillary Award skill. They are fascinated with what they have found so far!

Howick Intermediate School - Auckland

Hi - we are from Howick Intermediate room 18 and we have chosen Meet a Metre. We have 2 groups of 13 people altogether. We have chosen the rose garden and the grass area beside our class to investigate what living things live around us.

Limehills School - Southland

Hi. We are the Year 6 team made up of Josh, Dylan, Billy, Sally, Matson and Kacee. We experienced Meet a Metre last year and are looking forward to this years project.

Kia ora

Its the Limehills team here. We would just like to confirm our group name and data. Our name is Ernest Rutherford. We have done our worm count and are sad to say that we only found 3 worms. We have done the poke, scrunch, drown test and our soil felt hard and lumpy when we poked it and soft and lumpy when we scrunched it.

From the Limehills team.

Kaikorai Valley College - Dunedin

We are a Year 9 class (9Tc), and we have 8 different groups looking forward to being part of the Meet a Metre project in 2010. Kaikorai Valley College has a lot of school grounds and large trees and we have part of the Kaikorai Stream as well! We are looking forward to finding out how many different types of plants and animals there are, as well as how we can increase the biodiversity around us.

Karori Primary School - Wellington

Hi, we are a class of 27 year 5 and 6 students at Karori Normal School. We are really looking forward to being one of four classes at our school taking part in the “Meet a Metre” project.  We are especially looking forward to getting out into our school grounds to have a closer look at all the life that lies beneath our feet.

Hi from Karori Normal School. In Room 28 we have 30 Y7/8's. Our school has lots of kids for the spaces we have. The area our class is looking at is on the edge of the field near the road. We like searching for living things and we want to find out the names of the flora and fauna we find - not just spider and bug!

Hi, we are Room 19, a year 5 and 6 class with 25 students from Karori Normal School in Wellington.  We are very excited to be taking part in the “Meet a Metre” science project. Our area of focus is found in our school’s New Zealand garden.  We all have different ideas about what to expect.  We can’t wait to get digging!

Katikati College - Katikati

We are a class of 30 Year 9 students. Our topic of learning this term is ecology and will include water monitoring activities at our local Uretara Stream. Meet a Metre will give us lots of extra opportunities to explore biodiversity and  the interactions within an ecosystem. We are planning to explore the "gully", which is a partly forested area bordering on a steam and park at the edge of our school grounds.

Manurewa Intermediate - Auckland

We are an on to it team from Manurewa Intermediate School.  Last year we learnt heaps about soils, the types of soil we have around school and what we can do with it (earthbuilding etc).  This year we are keen to learn more about what lives in soils and how these organisms help soil quality and what they tell us about the type of soil we have.  We are looking forward to the Meet a Metre project.

Miramar North School - Wellington

New Plymouth Boys’ High School - New Plymouth

WeI have decided to do our Meet aMetre project next term. I know this falls outside your timelines and we won't get help from experts, but I have not been able to fit it into this term's programme. Still keen to do it, but not quite yet. Thanks for all your encouragement and enthusiasm.

Rahotu School - Taranaki

We are a small rural school in coastal Taranaki and this is our first time completing the Meet a Metre project. Our whole school (Y1-8) will be digging and poking around our grounds to find what living things live in our local environment.

St Heliers School - Auckland

We have seven Year 3 and 4 classes involved in Meet a Metre for the first time. We are actually studying our community so thought that we could look at the smallest members first! We are really looking forward to learning about what is under our feet.

Southland Girls' High School - Invercargill

This is Southland Girls'High's first year doing the 'Meet a Metre' Project.  We are all, as you all probably know, very excited to do this project and can't wait to get started!

Western Springs College - Auckland

Whangaparaoa School - Whangaparoa Peninsula

Our year 4,5 and 6 ‘thinkers and doers’ at Whangaparaoa will be taking part in Meet a Metre this year. We are going to be exploring a long forgotten and overgrown  native garden, and seeing how this has affected the plant and animal life there. Hopefully we’ll come up with some fantastic ideas on how to improve the area so that our whole school can enjoy it again.

Our six teams are called The Einsteins, Leonardo Da Vinci, Louis Pasteur, Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Pythagoras. We have been researching in our overgrown native garden. We have needed plenty of mosquito repellent!!! Samples have been collected and now we are going to work on our enhancement plans.
