Meet a Metre 2009

32 classes and six experts took part in Meet a Metre, which took place from May to July, 2009.

We had a good mix of decile 1 to 10 schools, primary and secondary, large and small from Southland to Auckland participating.

Our experts did a great job of giving feedback on the plans; ensuring good science happened.

Rosemary at Clifton Terrace School summed up the progress her class made:

The children have loved being part of the Meet-a-metre project and have learnt so much.

I remember the very first day of discussion when no one in the whole class knew what flora, fauna or fungi were.

Listening to their happy chatter today as they were working in their quadrats I was impressed by their depth of understanding of the scientific method and their use of specific vocabulary!

The project also generated some good publicity including:

  • Snells Beach School’s Arbor Day programme on TV3 Breakfast
  • Clifton Terrace School’s blog
  • Cockle Bay School organised a visit from Ruud Kleinpaste
  • Otago Daily Times article featured Abbotsford School
  • The competition to mark , Friday May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity
